Everyone loves waffles. I haven’t met a single person who doesn’t like them.
But there’s something even better about waffles. Can you guess what it is?
It’s the ability to try out as many different recipes as you can. This doesn’t only allow you to experiment – but sooner than later, you’ll end up with a personalized recipe book of your favorite waffle recipes.
Before we get started – you HAVE to check out this book called the Paleo Breakfast Bible
And that’s why, in today’s post, I am sharing one of my favorite waffle recipes which is a paleo almond waffle recipe.
But even before we begin, let me explain the paleo part of the recipe and a combination of paleo & almond – since that’s something I get asked the most when I share my recipe with friends & family.
What is a Paleo Diet?
Paleo diet stands for a paleolithic diet, and even before we get into the diet itself – I have to tell you an interesting piece related to its history.
I’ve come across many fans of the paleo diet but I’ve realized that not many people know where did paleolithic diet comes from. Not even the biggest fans of a paleo diet which really surprised me.
Paleo diet got its name because it has been available to humans during the Paleolithic era. As you can guess, this diet is very old and yet it’s one of the most popular diets nowadays.
Well, if you’re trying to watch your weight, eat healthily, and still get your dose of tasty waffles – you shouldn’t miss out on this recipe!
Paleo diet is also known as a caveman diet since this diet relies on food caveman ate.
Therefore, on a paleo diet, you can eat:
- Meat
- Fish
- Vegetables
- Fruits
- Nuts
- Seeds
- Herbs
- Spices
- Healthy fats
- Oil
But what you can’t eat is the following:
- Processed foods
- Soft drinks
- Sugar
- Most dairy products
- Vegetable oils
- Margarine
- Trans fats
- Artificial sweeteners
Is it Okay to Use Almond When Following Paleo Diet?
I get asked this quite often. These questions most of the time come from beginners who are adjusting their lifestyle to a paleo diet.
However, this is a very good question, especially if you’re starting out and you want to get things right.
It’s okay to use almond when following a paleo diet since it is a fruit and you are allowed to eat fruit when you’re following a paleo diet.
However, when it comes to combining paleo with waffles – there are a couple of things you should be aware of.
When creating your waffle mixture, you can’t use any type of flour and any type of oil. Luckily for you, if you follow my recipe down below, you won’t have to think twice before creating your waffle mixture.
Therefore, let’s go straight to the recipe!
Easy Paleo Almond Waffle Recipe You Will Love
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 20 minutes
You will need:
- 1 ½ cups blanched almond flour
- ¼ cup arrowroot starch or tapioca starch
- ¼ teaspoon baking soda
- 3 large eggs, room temperature
- 1/3 cup unsweetened almond milk
- 3 tablespoons melted coconut oil
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup
- 1 pinch salt
- ½ teaspoon vanilla paste
Ideally served with:
- Fresh fruits, like raspberries, grapes, blackberries
Instructions:
- Combine almond flour, desired starch, baking soda, eggs, almond milk, coconut oil, maple syrup, salt, and vanilla in a food blender
- Blend on high until smooth
- Allow the batter to rest for 5 minutes
- In the meantime, preheat the waffle iron
- Pour ¼ of the batter onto the iron. Cook the waffle for 3-5 minutes (5 minutes for crunchier). Repeat with the remaining batter
As you can see, you will have to get a couple of ingredients you might not already have in your household – which is a specific type of flour and milk (almond).
On the other hand, everything else remains very similar to the most standard waffle recipe – so you should prepare yourself for only a couple of changes.
Whether you want to fully commit to the paleo diet or you’d like to try out almond within your waffle recipe – I highly recommend you give it a go as you won’t regret.
Should You Fully Commit to Paleo Diet?
Paleo diet can provide a wide range of benefits, especially for people with diabetes. The biggest benefit of a paleo diet is consuming more real food (and mostly healthy food) while cutting down on processed food.
This diet itself can increase the energy of an individual, improve health rate, increase insulin sensitivity, cause fewer inflammations,
However, even though the paleo diet might seem like a perfect diet for someone who wants to commit to a healthy lifestyle, there are quite a few disadvantages you should be aware of.
As you probably understand, the paleo diet comes with a decent amount of dairy restrictions. This isn’t very bad, however, this can lead to deficiencies in calcium and vitamin D. These two are very critical to bone health – so while your skin might glow and your body feels great – your bones might not be as in shape.
But one of the biggest reasons I am personally not strictly committing myself to the paleo diet is that it can lead to certain heart and kidney diseases – and even cancer. I am definitely not kidding or exaggerating.
If you would consume the recommended number of saturated fats, you could drastically increase the risk of kidney and heart disease – and even certain cancers.
However, I still don’t think the paleo diet is as bad and I still commit to it for a certain period of time. But I am definitely not living by it either.
Conclusion
Even if you aren’t a big fan of almonds or paleo diet – I highly recommend trying this amazing waffle recipe out.
Why?
Because a couple of changes to the ingredients offer a big change to the taste. Hopefully, you will like it as much as I did.
